Overview

Steam Summarize ("we", "us", "our") provides AI-powered summaries of Steam game reviews through our website at steamsummarize.com and our Chrome browser extension. This policy explains what we collect on each of them. They differ, so we describe them separately.

Website Analytics

We use product analytics on the website to understand how it is used and to decide what to build. This is more than page counting: we record specific actions you take, such as searching for a game, which search result you came from, whether a summary was generated successfully, how long it took, which language you use, and whether you clicked through to our Chrome extension.

These events are stored against a randomly generated identifier held in your browser, which lets us tell repeat visits apart from new ones and measure whether people come back. That identifier is not linked to your name, email, or Steam account, and we do not ask you to create an account. It is, however, a persistent identifier, and combined with the events above it constitutes personal data under regulations such as the GDPR.

We also collect standard technical information sent by your browser: approximate location derived from IP address (country and region, not precise location), device type, operating system, browser, screen size, the pages you visit, and the site or search engine that referred you.

Our analytics requests are served from our own domain (steamsummarize.com/relay) rather than directly from our analytics provider. This is done so that the data is not lost to content blockers. It is a routing choice, not an attempt to conceal collection — this page describes exactly what is gathered.

Session Recording

We may enable session recording, which reconstructs how a page was used — mouse movement, scrolling, clicks, and navigation. When it is enabled, text entered into form fields is masked before it leaves your browser, so we do not receive the contents of inputs. We do not record your screen outside our own website.

Search Data

When a search successfully matches a game on Steam, we increment a counter for that game so we can show a list of popular searches on the homepage. We store the Steam App ID, the game name, and a count. We do not store who searched for it, so these counters cannot be traced back to an individual visitor.

Chrome Extension

The extension reads the Steam App ID from the URL of Steam store pages you visit. This App ID is sent to our API at steamsummarize.com to retrieve or generate a review summary. The extension does not include analytics, and does not collect, store, or transmit any other browsing data, personal information, or Steam account details.

How We Use This Data

• Steam App IDs are used to fetch and generate review summaries
• Analytics events are used to measure which features are used, find where the product fails or is slow, and prioritise what to build
• Search counters are used to display popular searches
• We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers
• We do not use this data to build advertising profiles or run ad targeting

Cookies and Local Storage

Our analytics provider sets a first-party cookie and uses browser storage to hold the random identifier described above. These are not used for advertising. You can clear them at any time through your browser settings, which resets the identifier and makes you appear as a new visitor.

Data Storage and Retention

Generated review summaries are cached to improve performance and reduce cost. We use Upstash Redis for caching and search counters, Supabase for summary storage, and PostHog for analytics. Analytics events are retained according to our PostHog plan's retention period, currently one year, after which they are deleted.

Chrome Extension Permissions

The extension requests host permissions for steamsummarize.com to communicate with our API. It runs content scripts only on store.steampowered.com/app/* pages. No other websites are accessed.

Your Choices and Rights

You can opt out of analytics by enabling "Do Not Track" or a content blocker in your browser, or by clearing site data to reset your identifier. The website works fully with analytics blocked.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete the data associated with your identifier, or to object to its processing. Because we hold no account details, we will need the identifier from your browser storage to locate your data. Contact us and we will help.

Children

Steam Summarize is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
